
When journalists have skills in coding or use data to their advantage, it can make the world of difference to an investigation. But those with the know-how are few and far between, according to data journalist Rui Barros.
Instead, it is possible to incorporate a data unit into your newsroom, and so he provides five tips how from his three years at Rádio Renascença. His advice is not to expect too much from the end result when you have limited resources.
"Aspiring to greatness is wonderful, but you should learn to manage your expectations – in other words, know what’s possible given the resources at your disposal," he writes.
"Some of the things you’re yearning to do may require much more time and collaborative effort than what’s currently available to you."
