One in five people in the UK live with a disability, according to a 2016 survey by the Department for Work and Pensions, but they get often overlooked by the media when it comes to news reporting.

Kristin Gilger, senior associate dean at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, and Amy Silverman, a journalist who updated the NCDJ's Disability Language Style Guide last year, shared their four key tips for writing about people with disabilities.

Speaking to Chloe Reichel of Journalist's Resource, Gilger said that journalists should be reaching out to disabled people to include them in all stories, not just those about disability.

"It just gives you a much wider range of sourcing, which is a good thing for journalism. It might lead you to some other very interesting stories that you might not have otherwise considered," she explained.
