If you've got a great idea for a blog and you have decided to publicly share your knowledge on a particular topic, how should you get started?
There are lots of things to consider before you start typing, such as the style of writing, your target audience and how often you will be posting, but one of the most important things to make sure of is that you know what the existing landscape of coverage for that topic looks like. After all, you risk losing readers if you go off-topic or if your content is too similar to other bloggers'.
Check out this useful article from Vicki Krueger, marketing communications manager at Poynter, in which she gives advice on how to sharpen the focus of your blog so that readers keep coming back.
She lists a variety of questions which journalists should ask themselves before they begin, such as how much coverage the topic is getting on a given day, and if that particular field has any online niches that can be tapped into – ensuring there is interest out there for what you will be discussing.
