Whether someone is a good source of wisdom and advice depends on their experience, values and personality
Mentorship can be an excellent way for journalists of all levels of experience to sharpen their skillset and develop their career goals.
Not just anyone will do, however. You have to choose the right mentor wisely, as their industry experience, values and personality determine how successful the relationship will be.
Presspad's junior digital content writer, Abigale Leyton provides insights into everything you need to weigh up when selecting a mentor. She also lists tips on how to refine an elevator pitch on that all-important question: asking someone to become your mentor. The first step is self-reflection.
"Before you begin your search for a mentor you need to acknowledge what your short- and long-term goals are and what support you would like from your mentor. Whether that is primarily advice and guidance, or an opportunity to shadow and develop new skills and ways of thinking to excel in your industry," she writes.
Looking for a mentor? Journalism.co.uk is running a mentorship scheme that pairs up UK-based local journalists with an industry expert to foster innovation in your newsroom. Check out the opportunity and apply before 4 September 2021
