Although it is one of the most interesting professions in the world, journalism is not going to make you rich. More often than not, entry-level jobs are not well paid and planning your personal finance, from rent to taxes, is tricky when entering the world of work.

In this interview for Poynter, personal finance writer for The Wall Street Journal Julia Carpenter talks about her own experience and offers advice on negotiating and budgeting. Although some of the tips are US-specific, many are universal.

"Sites like Glassdoor and Indeed will post positions and crowdsourced reports of what people make. That helped me realise that the salary jump between writers and editors is really big at this place, but not as big at this other place," she said.
