Summaries are slightly different from headlines or standfirsts - but they are a format to practice if you want your content to reach the right people
In an article for The Fix, David Tvrdon explains the role of the summary, not only on TikTok and Instagram but also in newsletters and podcasts.
Summarising the news is not an entirely new art - journalists have been doing this in TV and radio bulletins and short print articles for decades.
But these days it is more than a question of getting the key points of a story across to inform time-poor and low-attention readers as quickly as possible; it is also important to adapt your short-form content for different platforms. Writing one that is informative and engaging is a skill writers need to practice.
If you need more convincing, read the full article in which Tvrdon outlines (or summarises) some of the recent summary news products around the world and the success they have seen.
