It is not uncommon for reporters to feel unsure when writing about disability or interviewing someone with a disability if it's not their usual beat.

To save others from her and colleagues' mistakes, journalist Shannon Heffernan has put together a list of suggestions reporters should keep in mind when covering disability issues, published recently on Poynter.

Heffernan's advice highlights the importance of talking to people with the disabilities you are writing about, and that of using "people-first language" (i.e. “people with disabilities,” not “the disabled”).
