Editors from Pakistani publication Dawn share their experience and advice in researching and handling data on suicide
To raise awareness around the proliferation of suicide in Pakistan, since the topic is rarely discussed publicly, a team of editors at Dawn took at an in-depth look at the problem and collected their own data, with respondents sharing their thoughts and accounts of suicide.
However, the sensitivity of the accounts raised many questions regarding what should be published and the mental health of the reporters themselves.
Sherry Ricchiardi spoke to Dawn editor Jahanzaib Haque and project co-ordinator Atika Rehman about their advice for journalists considering a similar project in this article for Ijnet.
Rehman explained that her team did not anticipate the impact that sifting through such sensitive data would have on their emotional well-being.
"If I could to the project over again, I would certainly form a support group to talk about the emotional impact of these stories," she said.
