Newsroom veterans offer advice to early-career journalists on the job hunt
The coronavirus pandemic has made it a difficult time for journalists to take their first steps into the industry.
Freelance writer, Devin Windelspecht, compiled best advice from industry leaders for budding journalists on the job hunt during the pandemic, in this article for IJNet.
He reminds journalists not to forget about the important soft skills, as these are the bedrock of a journalist's skillset. Employers will want to see candidates who can respond well to setbacks (which happen all the time) and can foster strong connections.
"As important as the hard skills — writing ability, reporting techniques, journalism ethics and law — are for journalists, so too are the soft skills. Resilience, adaptability and the ability to find new stories are all skills journalists should begin to develop early in their careers," it reads.
