It is easier than you think to tweak your coverage to include a look at what can be done about the issues you are covering
Solutions journalism - stories which report on responses to societal problems and the possibilities and limitations of replicating the strategies elsewhere - can lead to audiences having an improved perception of your news brand. It can also help them to feel less powerless in the face of seismic global problems.
But this also means changing the way reporters work. If you want to start rolling out solutions journalism in your everyday reporting, consider these five starting points from Emma Löfgren, editor of The Local Sweden, writing for The Fix.
A stand-out piece of advice is to set a reminder to check back in with your old contacts to see how the schemes you have reported have performed or developed elsewhere.
"You’ve already done the groundwork, so looking at the story from a solutions lens won’t be as much extra work. Voilà, two stories for the price of one," writes Löfgren.
