Talking to a journalist about sexual violence in a warzone is risky for any survivor. Dart Center provides guidelines to help you understand what is at stake
Taking good care of your sources and respecting their needs are the two most important things for journalists to bear in mind.
Dart Centre Europe published an important report on sexual violence in conflict zones that includes tips for preparing for an interview with survivors. This is one of the most challenging topics a journalist can tackle so, before accepting any assignment, ask yourself whether you are sufficiently prepared for the job.
If you are interviewing survivors, consider the timing and the environment and, most importantly, make sure they agree to be interviewed. This includes making them fully aware of what is going on and checking with them that they understand why they are talking to you.
You can access the full report here and explore additional resources to deepen your understanding of acts of sexual violence like rape, forced prostitution, forced marriage, enforced sterilisation, and other similar crimes which can be linked to conflict.
