There's a lot of data about the European Union at journalists' fingertips, but sorting through it and knowing what to look for can be a daunting task.
POLITICO's Laurens Cerulus reviewed a selection of free tools "to make sense of the EU machinery", released by open data activists to help the public keep track of what's happening inside the European Parliament.
The list includes tools such as VoteWatch, to scrutinise the political involvement of MEPs, or LobbyPlag, which can flag up MEPs who copy-paste from documents originally written by lobbyists.
