Establish a solid working relationship with those backing your projects and investigations
Many investigations and projects require funding to get off the ground. But this is not just a one-off sales pitch, you need to develop a solid working relationship with them that goes even beyond your completion date.
IJNet provides some advice on establishing trust with media funders, translated from the SembraMedia blog originally in Spanish. The author, and SembraMedia's ambassador for Bolivia, Fabiola Gutiérrez, says that while it may be tempting to exaggerate your organisation's achievements, it is crucial to be honest about your difficulties and challenges.
Once this trust is established, it should be sustained throughout the investment process and should always reflect your organisation’s values and goals.
"Be true to yourself and your organisation, don't let yourself get distracted or thrown off course by topics that seem 'in style' for receiving funding in the moment," it reads.
