Whether you're looking to write a longform piece or a niche story, it's worth remembering these publications next time you draft your pitch
While not impossible, getting a byline in a bigger, more well-known publication can be tricky if you are just starting to build your portfolio as a freelance journalist.
You may be tempted to channel your efforts and initial pitches towards titles such as The New York Times or the Guardian, but there are plenty of other outlets that can be even better suited for your story, especially if you are writing about a niche topic.
IJNet has compiled a list of media outlets freelancers should consider pitching to, according to their area of coverage. Writing a personal essay? You might want to check out Narratively. And if you have a story based heavily on data, or you've uncovered a hidden gem in your travels (not necessarily literally), FiveThirtyEight and Atlas Obscura might be interested.
