Thinking of organising a coding hackathon, workshop or summer course and don't know where to start? This guide can help
Intensive workshops and short summer courses are a useful way for journalists to receive training and expand their skill set, without having to take too much time off from their day-to-day activities.
Some newsrooms offer bootcamps as part of their digital training, but where should you start if you're looking to organise an event of this kind?
Cindy Royal, a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, taught two immersive coding courses to mass communication students over the summer, and she shares some tips in this article on MediaShift.
Royal explains the structure behind the courses, which coding skills and programming languages she focused on and why, and how applying the learnings to projects the students were already working on made the lessons easier to understand.
