It was a thrilling day of racing on Sunday (20 October) at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium with the final of the prestigious BresBet Steel City Cup taking place. The race saw some of the best greyhounds over 500m compete for a first prize of £11,500, with all finalists receiving £1,000.
This year’s finalists were:
Trap 1 - Wicky Ned – Trained by James Fenwick, owned by Mr N R McGregor
Trap 2 – Bombay The Joker – Trained by John Mullins, owned by Bombay Racing
Trap 3 – Romeo Cypher – Trained by Tom Heilbron, owned by Mr D P Firmager
Trap 4 – Link Maverick – Trained by Tom Heilbron, owned by Mr K Heilbron, Mr T C Heilbron, Mr T O Rush, Mr D C Wilson
Trap 5 – Union Rebel – Trained by Kevin Hutton, owned by Mr P A Sandbach, Mrs C J Sandbach
Trap 6 – Farneys Willie – Trained by Richard Wales, owned by Mr R W Wales
It was a close race between the favourite, Wicky Ned, and Link Maverick, with the latter leading the race until the winning line, where Wicky Ned went on to win by the narrowest of margins.
Wicky Ned not only claimed the £11,500 prize for finishing first, he also claimed a ‘BresBet Bonus’ of £10,000 for winning both the BresBet Gymcrack 2024 and BresBet Steel City Cup 2024.
Commenting on the bonus, BresBet head of trading Carl Perry said: “We always try to support greyhound racing both here in the UK and in Ireland. This bonus for winning the BresBet Gymcrack and BresBet Steel City Cup is just one of the ways we do that.
“The bonus sounded like a great idea back in March when we first offered it, and we thought the money was safe in our pockets until we saw Wicky Ned in the opening round.
“Although it was a little painful to hand over the extra £10k, it was great to see such a top-class race at Sheffield. You really couldn’t have asked for a better final with Links Maverick putting in a mighty run to come 2nd by a short head, and Bombay The Joker following closely behind. It’s the sort of racing we hope to see more of in the future.”
Andrew Mascarenhas from Owerton Stadium said: “It’s great to work with BresBet again on another prestigious competition and for them to put up the bonus.
“It’s just the sort of thing the sport needs to encourage the high-quality racing we want here at Sheffield.”
Congratulations to all the finalists of the BresBet Steel City Cup.
