The paper examines the critical role of psychological safety in improving patient outcomes within the National Health Service
The Oxford Healthcare Academy has published a comprehensive white paper titled Safe To Speak for a Safer NHS: Implementing Psychological Safety for Patient Safety under Labour’s Vision for Healthcare. The paper examines the critical role of psychological safety in improving patient outcomes within the National Health Service.
The white paper addresses how creating environments where healthcare workers feel secure speaking up about concerns, mistakes, and potential improvements can significantly enhance patient safety and care quality. It analyses explicitly how these principles align with and can be implemented within the framework of current healthcare policy proposals.
Key findings include:
“Our research demonstrates that when healthcare workers feel psychologically safe, patient safety incidents decrease by up to 27 per cent,” said the director of research at Oxford Healthcare Academy.
“This white paper provides a practical roadmap for NHS leaders to create environments where staff can speak openly about concerns without fear of retribution.”
The white paper can be downloaded from oxfordhealthcareacademy.co.uk. Healthcare leaders, policymakers, and practitioners are encouraged to access this valuable resource to help shape the future of patient safety in the NHS.
