On 20 February, pet lovers everywhere come together to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day. This delightful occasion is all about honouring the special bond we share with our furry, feathered, and scaly friends. It is the perfect day to show them some extra love, attention, and appreciation.

While we might not know exactly who started National Love Your Pet Day, or when we have seen it celebrated since the early 2000s, one thing is for sure: humans and their pets have shared a strong and heart-warming connection for thousands of years. In ancient times, some pets were even laid to rest alongside their owners, a testament to the deep bond we have always shared.

According to research conducted by UK Pet Food in 2024, dogs are the most popular pets in the UK. Approximately 13.5 million dogs are kept as pets, with 36 per cent of households owning a dog. Cats also have a significant presence, with around 12.5 million pet cats in the UK and 29 per cent of households having at least one cat.

Bird enthusiasts should not be overlooked. About 1.5 million birds are kept as indoor pets, and 3 per cent of households care for them. Fish are also popular; 21 per cent of households have indoor fish tanks, while 13 per cent maintain outdoor ponds. Additionally, there are around 600,000 pet snakes in the UK.

No matter what kind of pet you have, enjoy some extra quality time with them on this special day. Plus, spending time with pets can help relieve stress and lower blood pressure — a double win.

How to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day

There are so many fun ways to shower your beloved pets with love. One of the things that makes us human is our ability to care for and adore our pets, so why not celebrate them? Here are some friendly suggestions:

  • Pet photoshoot: Capture those adorable moments with a fun photoshoot. You can hire a photographer to pamper your pet and dress them up for their big debut. Bring along their favourite treats and accessories to make it extra special. You will have some wonderful photos to show off at home or on social media.
  • Quality time: Treat your furry friends with lots of love! Spend more time walking, cuddling, and playing with them. You could surprise them with a new toy, tasty treats, or even a cosy new bed. Don’t forget to check up on their health too — schedule a vet appointment to ensure they’re happy, healthy, and getting all the love they deserve.

And if you do n0t have a pet, do not worry; you can definitely join in on the fun too. National Love Your Pet Day is a celebration for all animal lovers, whether you have a pet of your own or not. It is a day to appreciate the wonderful animals in our lives, so feel free to join the festivities.

  • Donate or adopt: Consider donating to a local shelter or adopt a pet, if you are able to, and give a loving home to a pet in need of a forever family. You can also help by taking care of a friend or family member’s pet while they are away. This is a great opportunity to learn about different types of animals and can help you find the perfect companion if you are looking to adopt.
