The first female editor of the 240-years-old Scottish newspaper says diversity is key to future-proofing the media
In September 2022, Catherine Salmond became the first female editor in The Herald's 239 years' history. She says lockdowns have a lot to do with it, as working from home allowed her to juggle family and work in a way that would not have been possible before the pandemic.
Having just celebrated the 240th anniversary of the Glasgow-based publication, Salmond is taking stock of its past successes and lessons learned but also looks into the future.
She puts people at the centre of changes, encouraging experiments and empowering voices from underrepresented communities. Despite its longevity, she does not the success of The Herald for granted and looks to diversify its newsroom as well as its audience to future-proof the organisation for the centuries to come.
