The reporter behind an exclusive family tribute to Raoul Moat's victim Chris Brown bagged the national title of Young Journalist of the Year at the GG2 Leadership and Diversity Awards last night.

Inderdeep Bains, chief reporter for the Slough and Royal Borough Observer took the award at the ceremony yesterday following the submission of three exclusive stories she had written for the paper.

"I was really pleased just to be shortlisted, that was a big achievement for me on its own. So I was quite surprised to have won," she told Journalism.co.uk.

Her prize includes £500 cash and a week's work experience at the Daily Mail.

The awards, which are hosted by the Asian Media and Marketing Group, recognise "ethnic achievement" across 10 areas.

Only one of Bains' submitted stories, about a convicted paedophile working with children, is available online in full.
