Internet search firm Yahoo! has revealed that its new European headquarters will be based in Dublin, creating 400 jobs over the next five years.

Micheál Martin, Ireland's minister for enterprise, trade and employment, made the announcement yesterday and said Yahoo!'s decision was a truly outstanding achievement for Ireland.

The Dublin headquarters will house a web hosting centre and customer support services including an editorial team for the Yahoo! websites.

"What drew us to Ireland was the calibre of staff and the technical infrastructure of call centres and data centres. It's also a great environment to do business in," said a spokesperson for Yahoo!.

Internet advertising specialist Overture, acquired by Yahoo! in 2003, is also based in Dublin. Yahoo! had been impressed with Overture's existing operation and its 'terrific staff'.

The California-based Yahoo! network includes 25 websites in 13 languages, and recorded 2.85 billion page views per day in December 2004.

Yahoo's competitor Google also has its European headquarters in Dublin.
