The event, now in its 19th year, was set up to "recognise excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledge journalism's significant contribution to the UK public’s awareness and understanding of human rights issues". Last year's digital winner was the whistleblowing site Wikileaks.org.
This year's competition also allowed a small number of freelancers to enter for free, as well as entrants from small digital and broadcast outlets.

Amnesty International is concerned that repression may intensify in this climate and warns that "there is little or no scope for free campaigning and dissenting views" - with over 2,000 political opponents to the ruling junta currently in jail. Over 40 journalists are believed to be imprisoned.
