UK freelancer wins Kurt Schork award for Afghanistan reports

Freelance investigative journalist Stephen Grey has been named as a winner in this year's Kurt Schork Awards.

The awards were set up in 2001 to reward excellence and bravery in reporting from areas of crisis and transition in memory of Kurt Schork, who was killed 10 years ago while reporting for Reuters in Sierra Leone.

This year's awards went to UK freelancer Grey and Adrian Mogos, who works for the Romanian daily newspaper Jurnalul National.

Grey, who is well known for his reporting on security issues and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, took the freelance category prize for three articles on the situation in Afghanistan written for the Sunday Times, Prospect Magazine and Le Monde Diplomatique.

Mogos, who was awarded the CEI-SEEMO award for outstanding investigative journalism in July, was acknowledged for two reports on illegal migrants, fake identity cards and forced labour in Europe.

The winners will receive their $5,000 prize from the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund at a ceremony on 3 November.
