Stephen Adler
Global news agency Thomson Reuters has announced the appointment of Stephen Adler as the new editor-in-chief of Reuters News, running the company's network of bureaux and 2,500 journalists worldwide.

He succeeds David Schlesinger, who has been editor-in-chief for the past four years and is now returning to China to help develop the agency's presence in the Far East and build "senior relationships in the region".

Adler, who will be based in New York, joined Thomson Reuters last year from BusinessWeek, where he spent five years as its editor-in-chief. Prior to joining BusinessWeek he spent 16 years at the Wall Street Journal.

Thomson Reuters chief executive Tom Glocer said in a statement: "Our goal is to make Thomson Reuters the world's leading source of news for professionals and Steve Adler is the perfect choice to lead the next phase in this mission.

"This is also the perfect moment for David to return to China in a senior strategic role to support the development of our businesses in this key market. David will now guide the strengthening of our presence, relationships and reputation in China."

Schlesinger joined Reuters in 1987 as Hong Kong correspondent and ran bureaux in Taiwan and China before moving to New York in 1995 as financial editor and then managing editor for the Americas.

He became Reuters' global managing editor in 2003 and was promoted to Reuters editor-in-chief in January 2007.
