The Sky News app, which has topped the free download charts since its 'soft launch' on Sunday, has been officially launched and is available for free via Apple's App Store.
The tool will also deliver breaking news alerts featuring text, images and video to users, a release from Sky said.
The service is particularly focused on video content and users will be able to watch video weather reports, news headlines and showbiz headlines by clicking an icon on the application's homepage.
“We are delighted that the video capabilities of this app for iPhone and iPod touch bring yet another first to Sky News viewers. We have spent a long time developing this app to make sure that it delivers first class breaking news in the way that Sky News viewers and web users have come to expect," said James Weeks, executive producer, new media for Sky News, in the release.
The launch follows the release of the Remote Record Sky+ app, which has been downloaded more than 260,000 times since it became available in April this year.
