Philip Graf has been announced as the new deputy chairman of media regulator Ofcom.

Mr Graf is former chief executive of the Trinity Mirror Group and also led the independent review of BBC Online which was completed in May 2004. The report was key in determining the BBC's strategy for its Charter Renewal period.

As deputy chairman of Ofcom, Mr Graf will join the regulator's remuneration, audit and nominations committees and will also chair Ofcom's content board which regulates radio and TV.

"I welcome the challenge of contributing to the work of an organisation like Ofcom and look forward to working with the team," said Mr Graf.

"The communications markets are critically important for the UK economy as whole, and effective regulation can make a real difference."

He is currently chair of the Broadband Stakeholder Group, which advises the government on promotion of broadband services, as well as chair of the Press Standards Board of Finance, the funding body for the Press Complaints Commission.

He stands down from both chairmanships when he takes up his new role at Ofcom on 1 January 2006.
