New editor for Media Guardian

The Guardian has appointed Jane Martinson to replace Matt Wells as editor of its Media supplement.

Martinson, who is currently associate city editor of the paper, will begin her new role when she returns from maternity leave in January 2008.

Matt Wells has already been appointed to the newly created role of Guardian's head of audio.

"This is one of the most prestigious and challenging media jobs in the business," said Janine Gibson, editor in chief of Media Guardian.

"Matt Wells will be a hard act to follow but we are delighted to have secured Jane who will bring a great blend of city and media experience to the role."

After starting her career at the South Wales Echo in 1991, then moving onto the Financial Times in 1993, Martinson joined the Guardian in 1999 as its New York-based Wall Street correspondent.

She returned to London in 2002 as the Guardian's city news editor and was then appointed media business editor in 2004 before moving into her current role.
