A new awards recognising the best in digital publishing in the magazine industry has been launched.

The Digital Magazine Awards (DMA) will reward editors, designers, writers and specialists, and generalist titles that are innovating in online and digital publishing. There are 19 prize categories open to entry and an overall award chosen from the winners of these for magazine of the year.

"I was trying to find a digital magazine awards for inspiration, and potentially to enter, but after contacting all the major digital publishing sites it became obvious there wasn't one," Bruce Hudson, founder of the awards and editor of Retro magazine, which is published digital on platforms including issuu, Yudu and Scribd, told Journalism.co.uk.

"The digital magazine industry needs to recognise the outstanding people and magazines to keep raising the bar and to act as inspiration to others. So I decided to launch the DMAs. Reaction from the industry has been unbelievably positive and the judging panel is filling with luminaries from the industry. I was particularly pleased to welcome on board the Guardian's Head of Communication, Nick Allan as The Guardian's work in the digital sector is pioneering."

The deadline for entry is 15 August 2010 and all work entered must have been published between 31 July 2009 and 31 July 2010. A judging panel will select 20 semi-finalists before whittling this group down to 10 finalists and then bronze, silver and gold prize winners in each category to be announced on 27 October.

Full details of the awards and how to enter are available on the DMA website.
