The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) has called on new journalists to submit work to its annual awards scheme.

The Excellence in Journalism 2009 Awards will recognise students and trainees from all media, who are studying for or have completed an NCTJ qualification, for work produced between September 1 2008 and July 31 2009.

"It is an opportunity for individuals to show they have what it takes to shine in this competitive industry, where the need for excellence is greater than ever," said the council in an awards statement.

Five prizes covering news journalism, sports journalism, top exclusive story, features of the year and images of the year will be handed out at the Society of Editors conference in November later this year.

Performance awards recognising student journalist of the year, photographer of the year and reporter of the year, which will both be awarded to journalists working towards their National Certificate Examination (NACE), will also be granted based on NCTJ exam results.

The closing date for entries is September 4 2009.
