The BBC has announced further closures and cutbacks on its network of websites.

BBC New Media aims to save around £6 million with the changes, which it wants to reinvest in more distinctive, value-for-money services.

US sports and local history sites will close and the lifestyle, cult and local news sections with will be reduced.

Local news sites will also stop publishing events listings - just one element that regional newspaper publishers felt presented unfair competition.

"This is all about focusing our investment so that we can best use our funding to reach and delight the largest audiences with the most distinctive and original content," said Ashley Highfield, BBC director of new media and technology.

"In order to free up the required funding we need to behave like television and radio - in other words, decommission, reduce funding or archive web content that no longer needs this level of investment or which may have become amply supplied by the market."
