The Knight News Challenge has opened the application process for its 2010 awards, which will see up to $5 million granted to journalism and online media projects.

Projects entered must use digital open source technology, distribute news in the public interest and test their products within a local community, the challenge's website states.

Entrants to this year's awards can register their projects in an open category, which allows anyone to see, comment upon and rate your idea.

Participants that aren't ready to have their work viewed publically can also enter their work in a closed category, which will only be viewed by the prize's staff.

A blog has been launched as part of this year's challenge to provide entrants with tips, including advice from previous winners. In addition participants can ask questions to the team behind the challenge via the foundation's twitter account and a series of live chats scheduled to take place at 2 pm on September 9 and October 8.

Previous winners of the award include DocumentCloud, a site providing an online database of documents that will be  searchable by topic and location; and the Media Standards Trust's 'Transparent Journalism' project.

Update (13/10/2009): All applications must be made online before December 15 2009.
