There are unprecedented opportunities for jobs in web publishing, according to research by the UK's Association of Online Publishers.

In its 2006 census, the AOP found that 75 per cent of its members struggled to fill new media vacancies, up from 58 per cent this time last year.

The trade association said staffing problems are being caused by rapid growth in the online publishing sector as well as a shortage of applicants with relevant skills. Editorial and sales roles are the hardest to fill.

AOP members reported that 429 new jobs were created in the sector since April 2005; members include Future Publishing, Guardian Unlimited, News International, ITV Online, Channel 4 and Condé Nast Interactive.

"We shouldn't be surprised that as our industry develops at such a pace that there is something of a lag in the arrival of talented, skilled people to help us take advantage," said AOP chair Bill Murray.

"The great news is that there can't be a more challenging, rewarding and dynamic area for people either considering or already developing a career in media than in online publishing."
