ITV regional news staff will be balloted by post on strike action, following the company's refusal to enter 'formal conciliation' with independent body ACAS over cuts to its staff numbers.

The National Union of Journalists has been seeking conciliation with ITV following the announcement of 1,000 possible job losses, which could see 430 regional journalists out of work.

A release from the NUJ said that '[NUJ] members are seeking a fair deal for all those affected by the cuts - with improved voluntary redundancy terms and sufficient guarantees around working hours, pay and staffing in the new structure.'

"We will not participate in the wholesale destruction of ITV local and regional news," said NUJ broadcasting organiser Paul McLaughlin, in the release.

"The current offer from ITV is simply not good enough to deal with members' concerns," he said.

"We are determined to win improvements through a negotiated settlement but a refusal to go to ACAS has left the union with no option but to begin a ballot for strike action."

The postal ballot will open Monday November 10 and close on November 24.
