
Mr Thornton, who will report directly to ignite! director of digital development, Kevin Heery, will take overall responsibility for the strategic planning and development of the ignite! web portfolio, which includes Nuts.co.uk, Uncut.co.uk, Loaded.co.uk and the award winning NME.com.
Mr Thornton is the former editor of dotmusic and NME.com, where he was at the helm between 1998 and 2003. He published his first book The Libertines: Bound Together earlier this year.
Mr Thornton said: "With the amazing recent successes of ignite!'s websites, in terms of traffic growth and innovation, it's great to be working with such a talented team of people at the top of their game.
"The opportunity to collaborate with this group of passionate innovators across four successful websites, and future websites, was too good to pass up. It's a challenge I absolutely relish."
