GuardianWeekly.co.uk has appointed Mark King to the newly created role of editor.

Mr King, formerly acting deputy editor for Money Observer, started his new role on 23 April.

He is responsible for commissioning content for the site, adapting content from the print product and presenting the Guardian Weekly podcast. He will also be working on the relaunch of the site due later in the year to bring it in line with the printed version's own redesign in May.

His advice to fellow journalists wanting to move online is to learn as much as possible until you become the right person at the right time for the job.

"Many print skills (editing, subbing, picture research, commissioning etc) are similar for an online product," he told journalism.co.uk, "But I would advise people to explore digital options as much as possible, even if they are currently working on a print product.

"Ask for training, start a blog, become familiar with social networking sites, ask if your online department has any spare subbing shifts, approach online editors with ideas/stories/blog suggestions.

"But make sure you are the best you can possibly be in your current role as, to a certain extent, that's what you'll be judged on in an interview."
