The Guardian's mobile site and iPhone app were recognised at the World Summit Award for best mobile content this week.

The World Summit Award (WSA) aims to select and promote the world's best e-content and most innovative ICT applications. This is the first year of its mobile content awards (WSA Mobile), presented at a gala dinner in Abu Dhabi on Monday night.

The gala was the opening event for the WSA Mobile Winners’ Conference and Expo, which ends today.

At the awards ceremony the Guardian was one of five winners within the m-Media and News category.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti was also a winner in the same category for its You're the Reporter project launched earlier this year, which collects and publishes pictures and videos from citizen journalists often using mobile devices.

More than 420 products from almost 100 UN member states were entered in the 2010 contest, the release adds.

"Mobile content proves to be national and quite different than online where global reach is the name of success", Professor Peter Bruck, chairman of the award said in a previous release announcing the winners.

"The winners show that excellent apps [are] not all run on just one platform such as iPhone, but many of the most used mobiles to deliver special value to users in a convergent manner".

The WSA-mobile awards honour the most outstanding content across eight categories.
