The Guardian has appointed Washington-based political journalist Michael Tomasky as editor of its US website Guardian America.

Mr Tomasky, who has written for the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Book Review, Harper's and The Nation, will takes up his new post on 7 May.

His brief is to develop the Guardian's online presence in the US to include enhanced coverage of domestic news stories, a greater focus on international stories of key interest to a US audience and the development of an America-focused front page for the site.

The Guardian also has plans to expand the US coverage in Comment is Free.

Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian, said in a press release: "We already have a substantial and growing US audience and Michael's skills and experience will enable us to build on this success."
