The Guardian's Martin Argles has been named Photographer of the Year in the inaugural Picture Editors' Guild Awards.
Argles, who also won the Photo Essay category, was awarded £1,000 as the overall winner and a trophy. His photos submitted for the awards were a series of images documenting former prime minister Gordon Brown during the 2010 election campaign.
The Picture Editors' Guild Awards was set up to recognise outstanding photography across eight categories, including an award for citizen journalism.
Getty Images' Chris Furlong, who was nominated in two categories, was named News Photographer of the Year at last night's ceremony.
Each category winner received £500 and a trophy.
