Edgar, who was previously editor of Europe, Middle East and Africa for Reuters Video, will be responsible for developing the video section of the FT site, which publishes more than 100 videos a month.
Before joining Reuters, where he was also Reuters Television's Frankfurt correspondent, Edgar was business editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
His appointment coincides with the recent launch of new video content on FT.com including a weekly interview produced out of Asia and a series of online business lectures from the Indian School of Business.
Edgar said he will push forward the use of video content across the whole of the FT's website.
"We created the position of head of video as this content will become an integral part of FT.com," said James Montgomery, editor of FT.com.
"The online media market is becoming very competitive and FT.com is committed to developing premium content and allowing our readers to consume it the way they want."
