A former News of the World news editor has been sacked from the Sun "in relation to previous work", according to reports.

In a statement, the committee tasked with carrying out the internal investigation into phone hacking confirmed News International had terminated the contract of a member of staff.

The man, a features editor on the Sun newspaper, has been widely identified in the press as Matt Nixson, although News International declined to confirm his identity.

"MSC (the management and standards committee) is authorised to co-operate fully with all relevant investigations and inquiries in the News of the World phone-hacking case, police payments and all other related issues across News International, as well as conducting own inquiries where appropriate."

The BBC is reporting that he was sacked in relation to phone hacking allegations while he was at the News of the World, although this is an accusation he reportedly denies.
