The BBC has confirmed David Holdsworth as the new controller of its network of local news websites.

Holdsworth, who has been acting controller of English regions since September, will be responsible for 44 BBC Local sites as part of his new role.

He will also oversee 40 local radio stations and 12 regional television centres, a BBC release said.

"My challenge will be to ensure that the BBC remains a relevant high-quality local broadcaster for future generations," he said.

At the Society of Editors conference in November, Holdsworth told delegates the corporation was looking to share expertise, infrastructure and technology with local news providers to enhance their web offering as part of the proposed £68 million investment in BBC Local online video.

Last month the plans were rejected by the BBC Trust, which said the BBC must improve its existing regional and local news output.
