The BBC and New York Times dominate the shortlist for this year's Webby Awards with nine and 15 nominations respectively.

The BBC is shortlisted alongside the newspaper and the Guardian, NPR and Salon.com in the news category, but is also nominated for its Democracy Live project and mobile news site.

The New York Times will compete against the New Yorker, Wired and Mashable for the Best Copy/Writing prize and is also in the running for Best Use of Photography, Best Business Blog and Best Mobile Application prizes, which recognise the best websites, technology and use of digital media.

In the magazine category, US Wired and Wired.com have been nominated alongside the New Yorker, The Economist's Thinking Space and multimedia magazine publisher FLYP Media.

Elsewhere GQ has received a nod in the Mobile Entertainment category for its iPhone application; while young adult's television network Current.com is nominated for the Best Television prize. The Economist has received a second nomination for Best Political Blog for Democracy in America and the Associated Press's live coverage of Barack Obama's Inauguration is also up for a gong.

CNN, NPR, the New York Times, the Guardian and Twitter will compete for the award recognising best practice online.

The winners, including the winners of categories for the People's Voice Awards as voted for by the public, will be announced on 14 June.
