Al Jazeera English, CNN International and Sky News will fight it out for the news channel of the year prize at the 2008/9 Royal Television Society (RTS) Television Journalism Awards.

The nominations for the annual awards were dominated by the BBC, which picked up 17 nominations, with 10 nods for Channel 4's Dispatches series, news broadcasts and independent programming.

Contending for the domestic news coverage prize are: ITN for Channel 4 News for its G20 Policing coverage; BBC News for its Gurkha Rights broadcast; and BBC Newsline for BBC Northern Ireland for its Threats and Murders programming.

In the regional news coverage category, ITV Meridian, ITV West and UTV are going up against one another. BBC South West, BBC Scotland and BBC Northern Ireland have been nominated in the nations and regions current affairs category.

Five News' Jason Farrell, Sky News' Joey Jones and Panorama's Paul Kenyon will compete for the specialist journalist award, while Sky News' Alex Crawford, BBC News' Ian Pannell and ITV News' Angus Walker have been shortlisted for television journalist of the year.
