Entries are now open for the 2010 Bastiat Prize for journalism.

The prize, organised by the International Policy Network (IPN), is open to writers whose work promotes and defends "the principles and institutions of the free society".

In 2009 the prize introduced a new award for online journalism, which will run again this year. Outspoken MEP Daniel Hannan jointly won the accolade for his Telegraph.co.uk blog, sharing the prize with Shikha Dalmia of the US Reason Foundation for work on Forbes.com.

Previous winners include the Financial Times' Tim Harford, freelancer Jamie Whyte and US newspaper journalist Barton Hinkle.

The winner of the Bastiat Prize for Journalism will receive $10,000, with $4,000 for second place and $1,000 for third. The recipient of the online journalism award, for which blogs and self-published material are eligible, will be awarded $3,000.

Participants can only compete in one category and must submit entries, published between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010, by 30 June. Full details of the contest's criteria and how to enter are available at this link.
