The awards, which returned last year after a two-year hiatus, now include the Royal Society Radio Prize for the best scripted/edited radio programme or podcast, splitting the broadcast category into separate prizes for radio and television.
Other categories also include best news item, best feature and best investigative journalism.
Entries to the awards can be made until 4 April and a panel of judges will then decide on a shortlist before the winners are announced at a reception on 8 July, where they will receive a certificate and cash prize.
According to a release last year's awards attracted more than 150 entries in 2010, with winners including journalists from New Scientist, The Observer, Nature and BBC Scotland.
Winning entries included a report by John Travis, Europe news editor for Science Magazine on a project which used DNA and isotope analysis of tissue from asylum seekers to evaluate their nationality, which took away the prize for Best News Item.
