The Independent's daily site traffic was up more than 10% in December
The website for the Independent newspaper recorded the only increase in traffic to UK national newspaper websites in December last year, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation.
The latest results from the ABC, for the month which includes the Christmas holiday period, show the Independent.co.uk recorded a rise of 10.56 per cent in average daily unique browsers, from 686,062 to 758,524. It also saw a rise of more than two million unique browsers for the whole month, from 13,596,368 to 15,833,084.
Among the daily average drops, Guardian.co.uk experienced the biggest decrease with a 20 per cent fall in unique browsers.
Meanwhile the Evening Standard, the Sun, the Telegraph, the Mail Online and Mirror Group Digital all saw their websites experience a month-on-month drop in average daily traffic in the last month of the year.
The Evening Standard had the second highest daily drop of 18.37 per cent, followed by the Sun's website with a 10.44 per cent fall in unique browsers and the Telegraph's site by 8.16 per cent.
The Daily Mail's website saw a 5 per cent drop in daily traffic, as well as a 0.95 per cent drop in the total monthly figure reported, compared to November's results.
In November the Mail Online reported almost 85 million unique browsers, but this fell to 84,172,568 in December. Yesterday BuzzFeed reported the Mail Online had overtaken the New York Times and is now the most-read newspaper site in the world, according to statistics from comScore.
Only the Independent and Mirror Group Digital saw its online figures rise for the whole month, with increases of 16.45 and 0.04 per cent respectively.
The Evening Standard saw the biggest decrease in its total monthly figures of 13.94 per cent, taking its unique browser result down to 3,199,013.
