NCTJ-trained digital news reporter required

Travel Gossip, the UK’s fastest-growing travel trade media brand, is looking for a full-time, NCTJ-trained journalist to join its busy news team.

Travel Gossip’s news division (travelgossip.co.uk) launched nearly four years ago and quickly made an impact in the industry with its travel news site and daily news email service. The overall company has grown significantly, including sales and partnerships, marketing and training divisions and now is the time to grow our news team to fit with our exciting editorial expansion plans.

Knowledge of the travel industry is not essential, but you must be an organised, driven and enthusiastic person with a solid background in news reporting who can fit in with the fast-paced environment of Travel Gossip. This is an exciting opportunity to build on your existing journalistic skills as a local news reporter (or similar) and make an impact in covering the lively UK travel industry.

The role will involve

  • Working with Travel Gossip’s two co-editors and senior reporter on covering the topical stories of the moment for the Travel Gossip website and daily email
  • Writing accurate copy at speed, meeting tight daily deadlines
  • Conducting interviews, face-to-face, online or on the phone
  • Generating high-quality on- and off-diary stories
  • Building and maintaining contacts with key people in the travel industry
  • Usually working from home
  • Attending regular travel industry events in the UK and overseas
  • Representing Travel Gossip at events or on overseas trips
  • Hosting tables, such as at our annual Travel Gossip Awards

The ideal candidate

  • Minimum 18 months’ experience as a news reporter, on a trade or local news publication
  • NCTJ-qualified or similar
  • Proven ability to produce accurate copy at speed and to deadline
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail
  • An eye for a good story and the ability to also tell a good story
  • Ability to spot stories and topics that are of interest to our readers
  • Social media skills
  • Not afraid to ask questions and not be content with simply regurgitating press releases
  • Organised, with excellent time management
  • Willing and able to attend events such as press conferences, launches and other media events in the UK – mainly, but not exclusively, in London
  • Willing and able to represent Travel Gossip at overseas events, such as conferences or trips
  • Must be comfortable self-editing and self-publishing news content, including sourcing and editing images

Knowledge of the travel industry is not essential, but an interest in the industry – and willingness to get involved and learn about it – is.

Salary: c£35k, depending on experience
