Overview
The vacancy is for a keen and motivated reporter based in Dubai with a proven track record of working under pressure and in challenging environments.
The reporter will cover a broad range of issues related to Middle East energy, with special focus on Saudi Arabia. This includes regular coverage of a range of energy (oil, gas, renewables, nuclear), geopolitical and economic stories primarily on Saudi Arabia but also other Mideast Gulf economies.
As the reporter builds out their expertise, they will have the opportunity to become an Energy Intelligence subject matter expert for client meetings, conferences, webinars, videos and media appearances.
Key responsibilities
- Cover important energy stories in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Co-operation Council economies, including oil, natural gas, hydrogen, renewable power, nuclear and technology trends.
- Analyse geopolitical relationships between Saudi Arabia/GCC states with key actors such as Russia, China, India, the US and the EU, as well as global climate diplomacy.
- Understand and explain corporate strategies of regional energy companies, including their approach to upstream, downstream, LNG and decarbonisation activities, as well as interactions with capital markets.
- Cultivate productive relationships with exclusive primary sources in the public and private sectors, government officials and energy industry professionals.
- Nimbly produce event-driven and enterprise news stories that include original information, sourcing and angles.
- Write forward-looking, original analytical articles that provide context and insight to current developments, and may dissect and challenge conventional narratives.
As part of a growing and dynamic team, the reporter may also be required to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required of them. Some travel will be required.
Skills/experience
- Keen interest in the region and energy affairs; previous reporting on Mideast Gulf energy advantageous;
- Excellent writing skills, including the ability to explain complex subjects in accessible and insightful prose;
- Strong analytical skills to gather information and explain important trends;
- A love of primary source reporting, and the ability to develop direct contacts with key decision makers;
- Proactive, self-motivated and prompt approach to developing contacts and reporting;
- The ability to prioritize and deliver daily, weekly and long-term assignments on time;
- Willingness to travel to attend conferences, industry events and site visits;
- Bachelor’s degree or other relevant professional training/diploma or equivalent experience;
- Excellent written and verbal English with a preference for competency in a second language;
- Multimedia experience is a plus.
