The International crime correspondent is an experienced journalist responsible for covering major international crime stories and developing exclusives in the field. 

This is a key specialism within the foreign news team, covering global criminal practices like drug smuggling, hacking, hybrid warfare, gangs and high profile murder cases. 

The correspondent will write stories for the newspaper and The Telegraph website, with an understanding of how best to present stories online. They will also work closely with domestic news editors, other foreign and domestic news reporters and specialists, and other journalists across the newspaper.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, accurate coverage of international crime stories.
  • Write breaking news stories and also provide relevant longer form pieces, including analysis, dispatches and features.
  • Work the crime beat to generate original ideas, develop exclusives and break new ground.
  • Meet tight deadlines and organise schedule around demands of 24/7 newsroom.
  • Have an understanding of the stories which attract readers and subscribers online.
  • Work across multimedia formats including video and audio.
  • Travel at short notice to cover and investigate stories.

Key skills

ESSENTIAL

  • Significant journalistic experience of writing for a top news website or newspaper.
  • Proven ability in filing clean copy to strict deadlines.
  • Experienced in both breaking news and working on longer pieces, projects and features, for foreign and/or domestic news desks.
  • Interest in and knowledge of multimedia storytelling.
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure and work autonomously in a remote location
