The Telegraph is looking for an ambitious journalist to join its growing business team.

The business team covers everything from FTSE 100 companies to the best of the UK's small businesses, from house price data to macro-economic statistics.

The principal focus of the business reporter will be the financial and professional services industries, producing strong, interesting reporting with a digital-first focus. The role will involve getting to know the key players in one of Britain’s most important markets, as well as the politicians and regulators responsible for overseeing it - covering everything from the City’s battle to compete with New York, to bad behaviour by partners at the biggest firms. They will sometimes also be expected to take on other topics as requested by the business desk editors.

Applicants will need to have an acute news sense and be demonstrable self-starters. They will also need to be numerically literate, team players, and digitally savvy.

Key responsibilities

  • Breaking great news stories about the financial and professional services industries, from scandals and problems at major firms to the policies and regulations that govern them.
  • Producing in-depth, colourful features on the industry and the characters behind it.
  • Ensuring fast and accurate filing of copy.
  • Helping to maximise digital subscriptions through concise and interesting storytelling.

Key skills

  • Experience of reporting on news and developing stories on digital and print platforms.
  • Demonstrable proof of the ability to tell stories in a concise but interesting way.
  • Experience of covering either business and/or economic news in a newspaper, newswire or digital environment.
  • Highly numerically literate.
  • Digitally savvy - understanding of digital storytelling and optimisation of content through social media and SEO

Essential skills

  • Ability to spot stories and opportunities from raw data.
  • Previous experience of covering the financial and professional services industries and a strong contacts book
